🏟️ England vs India – 1st day England off to solid start
England had batted first and started poorly, the openers both falling in the morning. But a tenacious Joe Root and Ollie Pope nodded the ship. Root made fifty by tea, a patient recovery in the classic Bazball mould. The match had a curious interruption when a swarm of ladybirds stopped play — with Ben Stokes being photographed swatting them off the field. England ended on 251–4 with Root not out 99*.
🌞 Morning Session – At last the Hundred
Root carried on watchfully with a boundary of the first ball of Bumrah to turn his 99* into a hard-earned test century (104). His innings helped England to an all-out score of 387, with significant contributions from Jamie Smith (51) and Brydon Carse (50), while Bumrah was the pick of the India bowlers with an impressive 5/74.

🧩 Day Two – Indian Resistance & Fielding Brilliance
India fought back hard with Shubman Gill scoring another fifty in captaincy pressure. The early breakthroughs were provided by Jofra Archer, in his return to the attack, and Ben Stokes. Root made an impression off the field too, snaring his 211th Test catch to move past Rahul Dravid as the most successful non-wicketkeeper catcher.
🎖️ Joe Root’s Records & Legacy Root reiterated long-standing plans to attack spinners with aggressive intent, then offered up the first reminder of two of England’s other goals, which he insists should be cornerstones of England’s cricket culture, sometimes until the day he dies.
Most runs at Lord’s (all formats): 2,526, surpassing Graham Gooch. First man to score 3000 Test run against India. Most Test catches as a non-wicketkeeper: 211, surpassing Rahul Dravid.
103rd fifty-plus Test score, bringing out his consistency. Root’s genius with the bat and in the slips makes him a modern-day giant of the game.
⚙️ Analysis – Keeping Control and Making Impact in the Conditions
England played it safe, rather than adventurous, scrapping the slow Lord’s surface which initially offered both bounce and turn from Jadeja and Reddy. Root and Pope had been the epitome of their side’s approach, basing their game on stability, time-on-bat and scoreboard pressure, a major shift in England tactics from the aggression of late. Bumrah’s disciplined spell kept India in the hunt as Root countered to fortify England’s position.
